SOUTHEASTERN COMMITS TO 10:10 - FIRST TRAIN COMPANY TO JOIN CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE CARBON OUTPUT
02 February 2010
Go-Ahead is pleased to announce that its 65% owned Southeastern
franchise has committed itself to reduce its total site energy use
by 10% by the end of 2010 as part of the 10:10 campaign to reduce
carbon output. Savings will be made across the company as part of
their commitment to providing environmentally-friendly public
transport.
Colin Clifton, Head of Safety and Environment, Southeastern
said, "As a company that runs only electric trains, we are aware
that we need to be managing our carbon output and look at ways of
reducing it without affecting the running of our services. We are
proud to be the first rail company to make this public commitment
which builds on the work we have already been doing. We have
already reduced our carbon footprint by nearly 20% and we are
determined to continue this in 2010."
Southeastern has already been recognised for its work by the
Carbon Trust and also the London Green 500 and continues to
increase its recycling schemes; 1792 tonnes of waste were recycled
last year. It has also introduced measures such as regenerative
braking and extra training for drivers on more energy efficient
driving techniques.
10:10 is a national drive uniting individuals, businesses and
organisations from across the UK to introduce immediate and
achievable action on climate change, aiming for a 10% reduction in
the UK’s emissions during 2010. For businesses this can be
achieved through four areas: grid electricity use, in-site fossil
fuel use, vehicle use and air travel. Already the campaign has over
60,000 individuals, organisations and businesses signed-up.
"As the first rail company to sign-up to the 10:10 campaign we
hope that we can encourage others to join us. As an industry we are
all doing our bit but we must make sure that we let others know so
that we can set an example to other businesses and our passengers,"
Mr Clifton added.
