Go-Ahead is pleased to announce that its 65% owned London
Midland franchise has been awarded the Mayor of London’s
Green 500 Silver Award for improving energy efficiency.
The Green 500 is a scheme which mentors major businesses,
operating in London, to help deliver the Mayor of London's target
to cut London's carbon emissions by 60% by 2025.
London Midland joined Green 500 in 2009 and went through a
carbon mentoring process, aimed at the rail operator’s sites
in Greater London, to identify ways of improving energy efficiency
and reducing carbon emissions and waste.
London Midland environmental manager Kathryn Jacques said Green
500 had generated plenty of ideas for further improvements like
changes to station lighting, waste recycling and colleague
awareness, that are now being looked at in more detail.
“We’ve focused on Watford Junction Station, as this
is our largest site in and around London, and we’re seeing
real improvements, such as an eight per cent reduction in
electricity use,” she said.
“Watford Junction has also formed London Midland's first
local Green Team, where station colleagues are working together to
raise awareness about energy efficiency and helping to identify new
ideas for improvements.”
London Midland’s next steps include looking at waste
recycling and investigating energy-efficient lighting for platform
canopies.
