Go-Ahead achieves Silver rating in Business in the Community’s eighth Corporate Responsibility Index
08 June 2011

Go-Ahead is pleased to announce that it has achieved a silver rating in Business in the Community’s (BITC) 2011 Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI), the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility.

The CRI helps companies to integrate and improve corporate responsibility throughout their business operations, by providing a systematic approach to managing, measuring and reporting on business impacts in society and on the environment.

Achieving a silver rating means that Go-Ahead conducts effective stakeholder engagement, has the right processes in place in order to identify and manage risks and opportunities. Silver performance band companies also tend to have reliable baseline data which enables them to demonstrate both management and performance improvement.

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community said: “I congratulate Go-Ahead on achieving Silver in the 2011 BITC Corporate Responsibility Index. It is a challenging time, but the results of this year’s Index demonstrate that companies are still focused on transforming their businesses in order to have a positive impact on society. All the companies who participated this year are at different stages in their responsible business journey, but they are all taking these issues seriously and are prepared to lead by example.”

The full results of the 2011 CRI, including commentary and analysis, are published in the Financial Times Responsible Business supplement today (8 June 2011).

About the CR Index
Business in the Community's CR Index is the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility (CR). It helps companies to integrate and improve CR throughout their operations by providing a systematic approach to managing, measuring and reporting on business impacts in society and on the environment.

For the past seven years the CR Index has inspired and challenged over 350 companies to continuously improve their impact on society and the environment. This year it is expected that more than 100 companies will participate publicly and use the tool to both improve their management practices and communicate to stakeholders how seriously they take their CR agenda.

ABOUT GO-AHEAD

Go-Ahead is a leading UK public transport operator, providing high quality services in the bus and rail sectors. Employing around 22,000 people across the country, over one billion passenger journeys are undertaken on our services each year. We are committed to operating our companies in a safe, socially and environmentally responsible way and are proud to have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after taking action on climate change. In addition to the travelling public, our customers include the Department for Transport, Transport for London (TfL) and local authorities.

BUS

Go-Ahead is one of the UK’s largest bus operators. With a fleet of around 3,800 buses, we carry, on average, around 1.7 million passengers every day. Our operations are focused on high density commuter markets. We have a strong presence in London, with around 21% market share, where we provide regulated services for TfL. We operate deregulated services in the Oxford, the South East, Southern and North East England. We also have a yellow school bus joint venture in North America.

RAIL

The rail operation, Govia, is 65% owned by Go-Ahead and 35% by Keolis. It is the busiest rail operation in the UK, responsible for nearly 30% of all UK passenger rail journeys through its three rail franchises: Southern (which includes the Gatwick Express), Southeastern and London Midland. In December 2009, Southeastern began operating the UK's first high speed domestic rail service between Kent and London, significantly reducing journey times.
