Southeastern
About Southeastern
Southeastern operates train services throughout Kent, parts of
East Sussex and south east London.
In December 2009 Southeastern began running new high speed
domestic services on High Speed 1 (formerly known as the
Channel Tunnel Rail Link) connecting St. Pancras International,
Ashford and the Kent coast. The service is the fastest commuter
train service in Britain and passengers benefit from significantly
reduced journey times. In the Spring 2010 National Passenger Survey
it was named the best commuter service, with 95% of passengers
happy or satisfied.

Southeastern takes its responsibility to the
environment seriously. In 2008 Southeastern and Southern became the
first train operators in the country to introduce regenerative
braking on the third rail* system. 113 of Southeastern's train
fleet are now regenerating electricity using this method. This
groundbreaking new system achieved energy savings by capturing
electricity generated through train braking and returning it to the
rail network.
Southeastern have implemented a very successful recycling scheme
which means that almost 68 tonnes of newspapers left on their
trains are recycled each month.
Working in partnership with the British Transport Police,
Network Rail and the local community Southeastern now has nearly
100 stations with 'secure accreditation' and there's been a 25%
drop in reported crime on their network, over the past four
years.
In 2010, Southeastern achieved Bronze Investors in People
accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to being a good
employer to work for and focusing on staff training and
development. It aims to achieve both Silver and Gold accreditation
by 2012.
* The third rail or conductor rail is the system by which some
trains draw their power. The system is mainly found in the South of
England.
