About Southeastern

Southeastern operates train services throughout Kent, parts of East Sussex and south east London.

In December 2009 Southeastern began running new high speed domestic services on High Speed 1 (formerly known as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link) connecting St. Pancras International, Ashford and the Kent coast. The service is the fastest commuter train service in Britain and passengers benefit from significantly reduced journey times. In the Spring 2010 National Passenger Survey it was named the best commuter service, with 95% of passengers happy or satisfied.

Southeastern takes its responsibility to the environment seriously. Through improvements in site waste recycling arrangements and working with staff, suppliers and contractors Southeastern is now recycling 71% of its waste. Efforts don’t stop there - plans are in place to achieve 90% recycling and zero landfill in the next year.

Southeastern is also using regenerative braking to feed power back into the network and is training drivers with energy efficient driving techniques designed to use less energy. As a result, Southeastern has reduced carbon emissions by 42,000 tonnes of C02 – saving around £6.2 million.

Southeastern have implemented a very successful recycling scheme which means that almost 68 tonnes of newspapers left on their trains are recycled each month.

Trains and stations are safer than ever: 95 stations recognised with a Secure Station Award,  incidents of theft and assault at record lows

Since Southeastern commenced the franchise in 2006, we’ve significantly increased the safety and security of our passengers travelling on our network. Robbery offences have dropped by 77 percent and assaults are down 21 percent.

In May 2012 Southeastern achieved Investors in People Gold and by December went on to achieve Champion status. This is highest level that an organisation can reach in the Investors in People accreditation.  Being a Champion means the company is a role model for other organisations and senior managers and directors can be called upon to present to other companies to explain how IiP has helped improve the way Southeastern works, by involving staff in decision making as much as possible and really ‘working together’.
