Our aim is to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate and wider society. First and foremost, we help people get to the places they want to be; connecting with family and friends, travelling to work or school and accessing retail and leisure facilities. By attracting more people to use our services, we strengthen our business while increasing the role we play in our society. Through the provision of passenger transport we make a fundamental contribution to the economy.
We aim to run our companies in a safe, socially and environmentally responsible manner. With this in mind, we run developed our Driving Energy Further strategy to reduce carbon emissions per passenger journey by 20% by 2015.
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. The Government has set legally binding carbon targets to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. Transport now contributes a quarter of UK carbon emissions, with cars accounting for more than half of this. In contrast, buses and trains contribute less than 5%. More people on our services mean fewer car journeys on the road, reducing congestion and pollution.
We have already made significant process in reducing our carbon emissions. We have achieved over a 12% reduction in carbon emissions per passenger journey since we began the initiative in 2008. Our target is a 20% reduction by 2015. We are also an active member of the Greener Journey to encourage fewer car journey.
“Go-Ahead's ability to seek out new areas to improve energy efficiency proves that, with the right level of skills, tenacity, and support, it's possible to improve carbon efficiency year-on-year – which has a hugely positive effect on the business." - The Carbon Trust
