Go-Ahead awarded third rail 'Murrbahn' network in Germany
The Go-Ahead Group is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Network 3A ‘Murrbahn’ routes by the Baden-Württemberg public transport authority and the Bavarian rail authority.
The network provides commuter services and important links between Stuttgart and Nuremberg, within the German federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Stadler Flirt3XL trains will run approximately 1.3m train kilometres a year on the route, which is currently operated by Deutsche Bahn.
Due to commence in December 2019, the 13-year franchise is the second contract and third network that Go-Ahead’s German operating company has been awarded. The two other contracts start in June 2019.
Go-Ahead Chief Executive, David Brown, said:
"We are pleased to have been awarded a contract for this important commuter route. We have 20 years’ experience of providing UK rail passenger services and our established team in Berlin will continue to consider further regional rail opportunities as part of our international strategy to build a long-term German rail business.
“Germany has a stable and growing economy and the largest liberalised rail market in Europe with regional passenger revenue of €6.9bn and 50bn passenger kilometres."
There is now a standstill period of 10 days before the final contract conclusion.
Go-Ahead is a leading UK public transport operator, providing high quality services in the bus and rail sectors. Employing around 29,000 people, over one billion passenger journeys are undertaken on our services each year. We are committed to operating our companies in a safe, socially and environmentally responsible way and are proud to have been re-accredited with triple Carbon Trust Standard for reductions in carbon, water and waste. In addition to the travelling public, our customers include the Department for Transport, Transport for London (TfL) and local authorities.
Go-Ahead is one of the UK’s largest bus operators. With a fleet of around 5,200 buses, we carry over two million passengers every day. Our operations are focused on high density commuter markets. We have a strong presence in London, with around 24 per cent market share, where we provide regulated services for TfL. Outside London, we operate services in Oxford, East Anglia, the South East, Southern and north east England. In September 2016, the Group began operating a bus contract in Singapore, on behalf of the Land Transport Authority.
The rail operation, Govia, is 65 per cent owned by Go-Ahead and 35 per cent by Keolis. It is the largest rail operation in the UK, responsible for over 30 per cent of all UK passenger rail journeys through its rail franchises: GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway) Southeastern and London Midland.
