Go-Ahead investing in local communities

Go-Ahead is committed to working in partnership, contributing to the local communities it operates in. Its regional bus companies have invested over £250,000 in the past year in community projects, working in conjunction with local organisations and charities.

Go-Ahead’s devolved approach empowers local management teams to actively participate in the areas they serve, delivering services directly informed by the needs of local customers, stakeholders and partners.

Our community investment programme in our regional bus companies has reached 150,000 individuals and over 1,200 organisations through initiatives including cash donations, lending buses and space for community projects, dedicating employee time to community work and listening to our stakeholders and local organisations needs.

Managing Director — Bus Development, Martin Dean said: “Public transport is the lifeblood of society, connecting communities and enabling people to get to work and education; to visit hospitals and relatives and to go on holidays.

“Building relationships at the heart of these communities is important, which is why we invest in them, taking care of different types of journeys in the communities we serve.”

Go-Ahead continues investing in the local areas it serves via a three-level community investment approach:

  • Go-Ahead supports Railway Children and Transaid, two international charities based in the UK that have a transport focus and therefore strong links to our business
  • Go-Ahead’s operating companies support more local initiatives that reflect the concerns and priorities of the communities they serve
  • Operating companies also support individuals or groups of employees who raise money for causes with which they have a personal link

Investing in local communities builds mutually beneficial relationships such as Go South Coast’s Alzheimer Society’s dementia friends work, which was recognised for contributing positively to one of the regions with the highest percentages of dementia sufferers in the UK. These initiatives which are aligned with the needs of society and our companies help working towards achieving our vision: A world where every journey is taken care of.

Go-Ahead

Go-Ahead is a leading UK public transport operator, providing high quality services in the bus and rail sectors. Employing around 29,000 people across the country, over one billion passenger journeys are undertaken on our services each year. We are committed to operating our companies in a safe, socially and environmentally responsible way and are proud to have been accredited with triple Carbon Trust Standard for reductions in carbon, water and waste. In addition to the travelling public, our customers include the Department for Transport, Transport for London (TfL) and local authorities.

Bus

Go-Ahead is one of the UK’s largest bus operators. With a fleet of around 5,200 buses, we carry over two million passengers every day. Our operations are focused on high density commuter markets. We have a strong presence in London, with around 24 per cent market share, where we provide regulated services for TfL. Outside London, we operate services in Oxford, East Anglia, the South East, Southern and north east England. In September 2016, the Group began operating a bus contract in Singapore, on behalf of the Land Transport Authority.

Rail

The rail operation, Govia, is 65 per cent owned by Go-Ahead and 35 per cent by Keolis. It is the largest rail operation in the UK, responsible for over 30 per cent of all UK passenger rail journeys through its rail franchises: GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway) Southeastern and London Midland.
