Go-Ahead’s bus operators announced as winners at UK Bus awards

Go North West, part of the Go-Ahead Group, won the Recruitment and Retention Category award at yesterday’s UK Bus Awards for their Elite Driver Recruitment campaign.

They developed a fresh approach to recruitment and retention by changing perceptions of bus driving to attract new talent, making substantial investments in the entire recruitment process, involving their training academy, mentors, the recruitment team, a revamped six-week training course, successfully tripling the number of trainers.

Brighton & Hove Buses and Metrobus won the Culture Change award. Their winning submission dealt with investing in a variety of wholly dramatised full-day CPC courses, including one on understanding customer needs and expectations.

Martin Dean, Managing Director UK Regional Bus with the Go-Ahead Group, said “I am delighted that Go North West have won this prestigious award for their bold approach to recruitment and retention, ensuring a 600% increase in applications, seven times as many drivers in training, 80% of applicants new to the industry, and a tripling in the number of women drivers they previously employed – representing the communities we serve

From the outset, colleagues are introduced to the company and the wide range of roles available, ensuring everyone’s valued. By celebrating the great work everyone in the depot and on the road undertakes, we are delighted to celebrate the positive impact this has on our customers.”

Services operate on dedicated busways delivering reliable and punctual services for communities

The Go-Ahead Group has successfully mobilised operations on the Fastrack network across North Kent under a 15-year contract in an agreement with Kent County Council that is worth £110 million.

Operations will commence with an interim diesel fleet before transitioning to a fleet that will be fully electric and in operation by Spring 2025. 28 zero-emission ‘tram-like’ buses will take to the streets of Kent, with on-street charging infrastructure to provide power to buses through the day.

The Fastrack network provides customers with a frequent ‘turn up and go’ service, connecting people to jobs, education, healthcare and shopping in an area of rapid economic growth which is undergoing significant regeneration.

With more than 2.5 million trips annually, reliable and punctual journeys are vital. The routes have dedicated traffic free lanes to get customers where they want, minimising delays.

“”
It’s been a breath of fresh air working with Go-Ahead on delivering the next generation of Fastrack. Putting the customer first has been our shared ambition on this journey and so much has been achieved in a relative short space of time. Go-Ahead partners with CitySwift to optimise service performance

The Go-Ahead Group has partnered with CitySwift, a public transport performance platform used to make timetables more efficient and maximise service reliability, benefitting customers and the communities connected by its bus services across the country.

The platform will provide Go-Ahead’s operating companies with the insights needed to maximise network reliability and punctuality, for an improved customer experience.

Go-Ahead has successfully utilised CitySwift in its East Yorkshire Buses, Oxford Bus Company, and Go North East operations. These projects showed an improved service punctuality of up to 14%, a 4% increase in customer journeys, and increased scheduler productivity.

CitySwift will be rolled out on a phased basis starting with Go North West and Kent Fastrack in Q4 2024 and for all other regional bus operating companies by 1 January 2025, with Go-Ahead London expected to be on-boarded in February 2025 and Go-Ahead Ireland later in the year.

Powered by intelligent data processing, CitySwift optimises more than 1 billion passenger trips yearly. CitySwift’s platform removes obstacles to accessing transportation data, empowering teams with rapid and reliable performance insights.

Half a billion-pound investment in electric buses to spark a new era of green growth

Half a billion-pound investment in electric buses to spark a new era of green growth

  • £500 million investment announced to deliver 1,200 UK-made zero emission buses, ensuring greener and better journeys for passengers
  • Bus operator Go-Ahead’s investment to benefit communities across the country, supporting hundreds of jobs and delivering growth
  • Transport Secretary brings together industry to advance opportunities for investment in the UK ahead of investment summit

Up to 500 UK manufacturing jobs are set to be supported as bus operator Go-Ahead today (8 October 2024) announces a major £500 million investment to decarbonise its fleet, including creating a new dedicated manufacturing line and partnership with Northern Ireland-based bus manufacturer Wrightbus.

The investment is set to fund the manufacturing of up to 1,200 new zero emission buses over the next 3 years. Built for operator Go Ahead, this investment will accelerate the transition to greener buses across the country including in Plymouth, Gloucestershire, East Yorkshire, London and the Isle of Wight.

On top of directly supporting 500 manufacturing jobs, the £500 million investment for Wrightbus will also support an additional 2,000 jobs across the wider UK supply chain by 2026, helping to get us back on track for growth.

The Transport Secretary will also announce plans to create a new UK Bus Manufacturing Expert Panel. This panel will bring together industry experts and local leaders to explore ways to ensure the UK remains a leader in bus manufacturing, help local authorities deliver on their transport ambitions, and begin to seize opportunities to embrace zero emission transport technologies.

The Transport Secretary is expected to meet with key industry leaders today including Wrightbus owner Jo Bamford and CEO Jean-Marc Gales, to reaffirm the government’s commitment to decarbonising local transport and fostering an environment for investment in the UK manufacturing industry, bringing sustained economic growth and supporting jobs.

The announcement comes ahead of the International Investment Summit, which will gather UK leaders, high-profile investors and businesses from across the world to discuss how we can deepen our partnership to drive investment and growth.

The Transport Secretary is expected to hold several bilateral meetings at the summit with international business leaders and make clear the UK is “open for business” so that she can help attract further investment to support the delivery of our transport priorities across the country.

The Prime Minister will also convene the first Council of Nations and Regions later this week, bringing together first ministers, Northern Ireland’s First Minister and Deputy First Minister and regional mayors from across England, as the government forges new partnerships, resets relationships to secure long term investment with the aim of boosting growth and living standards in every part of the UK.

“”
The number one mission of this government is growing the economy. The half a billion pounds Go Ahead is announcing today shows the confidence industry has in investing in the UK.

This announcement will see communities across the country benefit from brand new, state-of-the-art green buses – which will deliver cleaner air and better journeys.

We’re creating the right conditions for businesses to flourish, so we can support jobs and accelerate towards decarbonising the transport sector.

Under this government, Britain is open for business.

Transport Secretary, Louise Haigh

“”
This multi-million pound investment and partnership with Wrightbus will accelerate the transition to zero-emission fleet across the UK.

We are proud to be working in partnership with the UK government and local authorities to deliver transformational environmental change for communities, while supporting UK jobs and the growth of the country’s supply chain.

Go-Ahead Bus CEO, Matt Carney

“”
The deal with Go-Ahead is hugely significant and represents a huge boost to the UK’s economy. It will support homegrown manufacturing, jobs and skills for the next three years and beyond. We’ve always been proud to support the UK’s supply chain and our Go-Ahead partnership will ensure even more money can be spent securing good green jobs.

We must also not forget that this deal represents a massive step forward in our ambition to help decarbonise the transport sector with our world-leading products. It was heartening today to hear the government reaffirm its commitment to a green transport sector.

Go-Ahead mark first-year as partners in Greater Manchester’s Bee Network

Go-Ahead mark first-year as partners in Greater Manchester’s Bee Network

  • Go North West marks its first year working with Transport for Greater Manchester to deliver ground breaking vision for transport
  • Significant improvements in network performance and service reliability achieved by working in partnership in the first twelve months of operation
  • Major investment in training and skills as over 150 apprentices join as bus drivers

Go-Ahead’s subsidiary Go North West is today celebrating its first anniversary of Bee Network operations and partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The Bee Network, the UK’s first franchised bus operation outside London, began on 24 September 2023. Go-Ahead launched the initial two major franchised contracts in Bolton and Wigan, covering nearly 1,000 drivers and 55 routes with a fleet of over 300 buses. This mobilisation was one of the largest of its kind in UK history.

Over the past year, Go North West have significantly improved punctuality and overall performance across the Bee Network, driving up service standards and customer experience.  In April 2024 further network enhancements were made in collaboration with TfGM, including the introduction of additional buses and night services to support the city-region’s nighttime economy and those who work within it.

Since the start of Bee Network operations, Go North West has trained over 150 apprentices at its Elite Driver Academy, investing in top-tier training for drivers across the Bee Network, helping people build their careers in the industry. Earlier this year, Go-Ahead Women was also launched in Manchester, aiming to foster a more diverse workforce and inclusive environment.

In the last 12 months, Go-Ahead used its global expertise to deploy 50 new zero-emission buses, contributing to TfGM’ decarbonisation objectives and their target to achieve net zero by 2038. This investment has improved the environment for communities across Greater Manchester.

Go North West has also been successful in securing contracts across all three rounds of franchising in the city region, with the next batch of operations set to commence in early 2025.

“”
Our first year in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester has been an incredible journey. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made in improving service and investing in our people. It’s exciting to see how our efforts are benefiting both our customers and the wider community. We look forward to continuing our work together to create an even more efficient and sustainable transport network for Greater Manchester

Nigel Featham, Managing Director of Go North West

“”
I’m proud of our partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester and the meaningful change we have delivered for communities across the city-region. We fully support the Mayor’s vision of a sustainable, integrated public transport network and look forward to continuing to use our global expertise from other franchised operations to benefit this partnership.

Matt Carney, CEO – Bus at Go-Ahead Group

“”
We are really proud of the progress that has been made in delivering better bus services in Wigan and Bolton. This is part of building the Bee Network, which is bringing together buses, trams, trains and active travel into a single, simpler and more affordable system for the people and businesses of Greater Manchester.

We have worked in partnership with Go North West to make bus franchising a success. In just a year we have seen patronage and punctuality significantly increase, revenue exceed forecast and the cost of operation fall.

The job now is to continuously improve services in collaboration with our local districts and communities and we look forward bringing the rest of Greater Manchester’s bus network under public control from January next year. I’d like to thank the people of Transport for Greater Manchester and Go North West for all their hard work and commitment in achieving these results.

Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester

The route, run by our Southern Vectis team, won an outstanding 79% of the votes. It is a circular route connecting the West Wight and has views that will simply take your breath away. The route links Yarmouth to Freshwater Bay, Dimbola Museum and Galleries, Fort Victoria Country Park, and The Needles Landmark Attraction at Alum Bay. Our drivers are friendly, helpful and very experienced with offering tourist advice. The route has some of the most stunning views to offer in the UK and I would encourage everyone to come and have a ride.”

Go-Ahead’s regional bus companies run a variety of open top tours across Britain. Others include:

Go-Ahead expands its national coach operations with the acquisition of Regency Coaches in Sussex

Go-Ahead expands its national coach operations with the acquisition of Regency Coaches in Sussex

  • Coach operator to become part of Brighton & Hove Buses
  • Deal adds to Go-Ahead’s expanding network of UK coach operators

The Go-Ahead Group has agreed a deal to acquire Regency Coaches, a coach operator headquartered in East Sussex. The business will become part of Go-Ahead’s subsidiary, Brighton and Hove Buses.

Regency Coaches operates school and private hire services, which will continue to be served by Brighton and Hove Buses as this new period of operation begins.

This latest deal builds on Go-Ahead’s other acquisitions across England, including Pulhams Coaches and four coach companies across North and West Yorkshire, and the North East which further strengthen our service offering for schools, businesses and local authority partners. Go-Ahead is now one of the largest coach operators in the UK.

Brighton and Hove Buses, and its sister company, Metrobus, both part of the Go-Ahead Group, operate a fleet of over 400 buses across a network of 123 routes serving Brighton and Hove, connecting the city with communities across the counties of Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

Between the two operators, customers make 62 million journeys per year which is more bus journeys per head of the population than anywhere in the UK outside of London. This acquisition further grows Brighton and Hove Buses network, following the acquisition of Eastbourne Sightseeing at the start of this year.

Matt Carney, CEO – Go-Ahead Bus, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Regency Coaches to the Go-Ahead Group, and to grow our presence in the UK coach market. As a company we’re committed to connecting communities, so providing coach services across the country for schools, groups, small business and local authority partners is an important transport mode for our communities. This is an exciting expansion of our coach operation to provide all customers across the South Coast with even more choice.”

Ed Wills, Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Buses, said:

“We are delighted to offer a greater variety of coaching vehicles and services as part of our business. I’d also like to welcome on board all drivers from Regency Coaches to the company. With a larger fleet in the local area, we look forward to growing the business, working with new and existing customers. Coaches are a great way to encourage people to travel more sustainably and without the stress of driving.”

Gavin will head up the team delivering the Fastrack network in Kent, a 15-year contract worth £110 million which Go-Ahead will operate from November 2024.

Gavin has worked in the public transport industry for over 20 years, starting his career as a bus driver in London before progressing into management roles and later leading the development and mobilisation of Go-Ahead’s River Road depot. He worked as Operations Director of Go-Ahead Singapore and then as Project Director in Australia before becoming Managing Director of Go East Anglia, a role he has held since July 2022.

Gavin will be replaced on an interim basis by Rupert Cox, a highly experienced bus industry professional, formerly a Regional Director for Stagecoach UK Bus, Rupert has worked with Go East Anglia since 1st March this year on business development projects.

Commenting on his move to the new role, Gavin Smith, said “I’m excited to be taking on the job leading the Fastrack network in Kent. Go-Ahead’s operator Carousel Buses ready to serve communities as Arriva announces closure of depots in Buckinghamshire

Go-Ahead’s operator Carousel Buses ready to serve communities as Arriva announces closure of depots in Buckinghamshire

Yesterday’s announcement that Arriva has plans to close depots in Buckinghamshire will have caused concern for communities and local authority partners. Carousel Buses, part of the Go-Ahead Group, stands ready to operate their services in High Wycombe.

Without any operator stepping in to the fold, the closure of Arriva depots in Buckinghamshire would mean a widespread cut for routes in and around High Wycombe which currently link the town to Reading, Amersham and several other towns and villages in the Chilterns.

Martin Dean, Managing Director of Go-Ahead Group’s Regional Bus division said “We are ready to work with our local authority partners and to support the current workforce, to keep bus services running in High Wycombe. We want to reassure customers that we would take on services as soon as Arriva makes its decision to exit the bus market in High Wycombe”.

Luke Marion, Managing Director of Carousel Buses said “We are proud to serve communities in the area and recognise the importance of the network in connecting urban and rural communities to help people travel to places of work, education, and to see family and friends. Arriva’s network overlaps with our services which presents a positive opportunity to enable seamless travel if it becomes part of our company”.

The Go-Ahead Group and its regional bus operators have long-held experience of rescuing services where other operators have withdrawn. In 2023, Go-Ahead’s operator Go South Coast took on additional services in Southampton when First Bus withdrew. The year before, in 2022, they also ensured customers in Bournemouth weren’t left behind as a small operator collapsed which required the recruitment of over 100 staff in 48 hours to get services back on the road again.

Carousel Buses, a subsidiary of Oxford Bus Company and part of the wider Go-Ahead Group, are an experienced High Wycombe based operator, running a network of 50 buses in the area and across Buckinghamshire.

In partnership with Buckinghamshire County Council, Carousel Buses has recently announced several improvements that will see increased service frequency and upgraded fleet on routes between High Wycombe, towns in Buckinghamshire, and Heathrow Airport from the start of the June.
