Go-Ahead trials new approach to accelerate the transition to greener buses

Go-Ahead trials new approach to accelerate the transition to greener buses

Go-Ahead, a leading zero emission bus operator, has launched a new trial to convert diesel buses to electric vehicles.

In partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, Go North West has worked with WrightBus to retrofit a diesel bus, speeding up the decarbonisation process and extending the longevity of the bus.

The converted bus is part of Transport for Greater Manchester’s Bee Network, the UK’s first franchised bus operation outside London where Go-Ahead is already operating 69 zero emission buses from its Bolton depot.

This forms part of Go-Ahead’s commitment for a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2035. As well as almost 1,000 zero emission buses, Go-Ahead operates electric depots across the country, including the award-winning fully electric garage in Waterloo and the largest electric bus depot in the UK, in Northumberland Park. Go-Ahead also operates buses that use alternative fuel, such as hydrogen buses.

“”
Last year we made an investment of half-a-billion pounds to deliver more than 1,000 additional zero emission buses with WrightBus. Additionally, in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, we’re seeing how we can decarbonise our existing buses using NewPower. Our partners WrightBus and Transport for Greater Manchester have been excellent to work with and we’re excited about the potential this technology provides. We’re committed to working with Transport for Greater Manchester to achieve net zero across their Bee Network.

Half a billion-pound investment in electric buses to spark a new era of green growth

Half a billion-pound investment in electric buses to spark a new era of green growth

  • £500 million investment announced to deliver 1,200 UK-made zero emission buses, ensuring greener and better journeys for passengers
  • Bus operator Go-Ahead’s investment to benefit communities across the country, supporting hundreds of jobs and delivering growth
  • Transport Secretary brings together industry to advance opportunities for investment in the UK ahead of investment summit

Up to 500 UK manufacturing jobs are set to be supported as bus operator Go-Ahead today (8 October 2024) announces a major £500 million investment to decarbonise its fleet, including creating a new dedicated manufacturing line and partnership with Northern Ireland-based bus manufacturer Wrightbus.

The investment is set to fund the manufacturing of up to 1,200 new zero emission buses over the next 3 years. Built for operator Go Ahead, this investment will accelerate the transition to greener buses across the country including in Plymouth, Gloucestershire, East Yorkshire, London and the Isle of Wight.

On top of directly supporting 500 manufacturing jobs, the £500 million investment for Wrightbus will also support an additional 2,000 jobs across the wider UK supply chain by 2026, helping to get us back on track for growth.

The Transport Secretary will also announce plans to create a new UK Bus Manufacturing Expert Panel. This panel will bring together industry experts and local leaders to explore ways to ensure the UK remains a leader in bus manufacturing, help local authorities deliver on their transport ambitions, and begin to seize opportunities to embrace zero emission transport technologies.

The Transport Secretary is expected to meet with key industry leaders today including Wrightbus owner Jo Bamford and CEO Jean-Marc Gales, to reaffirm the government’s commitment to decarbonising local transport and fostering an environment for investment in the UK manufacturing industry, bringing sustained economic growth and supporting jobs.

The announcement comes ahead of the International Investment Summit, which will gather UK leaders, high-profile investors and businesses from across the world to discuss how we can deepen our partnership to drive investment and growth.

The Transport Secretary is expected to hold several bilateral meetings at the summit with international business leaders and make clear the UK is “open for business” so that she can help attract further investment to support the delivery of our transport priorities across the country.

The Prime Minister will also convene the first Council of Nations and Regions later this week, bringing together first ministers, Northern Ireland’s First Minister and Deputy First Minister and regional mayors from across England, as the government forges new partnerships, resets relationships to secure long term investment with the aim of boosting growth and living standards in every part of the UK.

“”
The number one mission of this government is growing the economy. The half a billion pounds Go Ahead is announcing today shows the confidence industry has in investing in the UK.

This announcement will see communities across the country benefit from brand new, state-of-the-art green buses – which will deliver cleaner air and better journeys.

We’re creating the right conditions for businesses to flourish, so we can support jobs and accelerate towards decarbonising the transport sector.

Under this government, Britain is open for business.

Transport Secretary, Louise Haigh

Go-Ahead mark first-year as partners in Greater Manchester’s Bee Network

Go-Ahead mark first-year as partners in Greater Manchester’s Bee Network

  • Go North West marks its first year working with Transport for Greater Manchester to deliver ground breaking vision for transport
  • Significant improvements in network performance and service reliability achieved by working in partnership in the first twelve months of operation
  • Major investment in training and skills as over 150 apprentices join as bus drivers

Go-Ahead’s subsidiary Go North West is today celebrating its first anniversary of Bee Network operations and partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The Bee Network, the UK’s first franchised bus operation outside London, began on 24 September 2023. Go-Ahead launched the initial two major franchised contracts in Bolton and Wigan, covering nearly 1,000 drivers and 55 routes with a fleet of over 300 buses. This mobilisation was one of the largest of its kind in UK history.

Over the past year, Go North West have significantly improved punctuality and overall performance across the Bee Network, driving up service standards and customer experience.  In April 2024 further network enhancements were made in collaboration with TfGM, including the introduction of additional buses and night services to support the city-region’s nighttime economy and those who work within it.

Since the start of Bee Network operations, Go North West has trained over 150 apprentices at its Elite Driver Academy, investing in top-tier training for drivers across the Bee Network, helping people build their careers in the industry. Earlier this year, Go-Ahead Women was also launched in Manchester, aiming to foster a more diverse workforce and inclusive environment.

In the last 12 months, Go-Ahead used its global expertise to deploy 50 new zero-emission buses, contributing to TfGM’ decarbonisation objectives and their target to achieve net zero by 2038. This investment has improved the environment for communities across Greater Manchester.

Go North West has also been successful in securing contracts across all three rounds of franchising in the city region, with the next batch of operations set to commence in early 2025.

“”
Our first year in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester has been an incredible journey. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made in improving service and investing in our people. It’s exciting to see how our efforts are benefiting both our customers and the wider community. We look forward to continuing our work together to create an even more efficient and sustainable transport network for Greater Manchester

Nigel Featham, Managing Director of Go North West

“”
I’m proud of our partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester and the meaningful change we have delivered for communities across the city-region. We fully support the Mayor’s vision of a sustainable, integrated public transport network and look forward to continuing to use our global expertise from other franchised operations to benefit this partnership.

Matt Carney, CEO – Bus at Go-Ahead Group

“”
We are really proud of the progress that has been made in delivering better bus services in Wigan and Bolton. This is part of building the Bee Network, which is bringing together buses, trams, trains and active travel into a single, simpler and more affordable system for the people and businesses of Greater Manchester.

We have worked in partnership with Go North West to make bus franchising a success. In just a year we have seen patronage and punctuality significantly increase, revenue exceed forecast and the cost of operation fall.

The job now is to continuously improve services in collaboration with our local districts and communities and we look forward bringing the rest of Greater Manchester’s bus network under public control from January next year. I’d like to thank the people of Transport for Greater Manchester and Go North West for all their hard work and commitment in achieving these results.

Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester
