What you’ll do

Our engineers play a vital role in maintaining and repairing a diverse range of mechanical and electrical systems. Our buses are often on the road 24 hours a day, so our engineers need to be well trained, confident and focused on doing the job right. As an apprentice, you’ll learn how to maintain and repair complex mechanical and electrical systems, including the latest zero-emission technology.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for enthusiastic people who are keen to learn and have a passion for engineering or automotive technology. You’ll need to have completed at least Grade level 4 and above in English, Maths and a Science related subject. You don’t need previous professional experience, but you should have good communication, literacy and interpersonal skills, possess a good level of problem-solving skills and be ready to work as part of a team.

World-class training and support

Your training combines classroom learning with real-world experience, giving you the skills and confidence to work safely and effectively in our garages. Your apprenticeship begins with time at one of our state-of-the-art engineering academies. Here, you’ll spend your first 8 weeks learning many of the basic skills and work instructions that you will need throughout your career.

As you progress, you’ll gain a recognised qualification while earning a wage and developing the foundations of your engineering career.

The next stage of the programme is delivered in partnership with S&B Automotive Academy, one of the UK’s leading apprenticeship providers. Throughout your first year, you’ll return to the academies for further training blocks, including hands-on tasks such as a complete engine strip and rebuild to help build your understanding of how things work and why we maintain them.

You’ll be supported every step of the way by dedicated mentors, many of whom started their own careers as apprentices. They understand the challenges you’ll face and are there to guide and support you both during academy training and on the job at your operating company.

Earning while you learn

As a Go-Ahead engineering apprentice, you’ll earn a wage while gaining skills and experience. Travel, accommodation and meals are fully funded while you’re training at the academies, and safeguarding policies are always in place.

As you progress through your first year you will be given the opportunity to gain a full UK driving license paid for by Go-Ahead.
